Abby Johnson is president and chief executive officer of FMR LLC, the parent company of Fidelity Investments, a diversified financial services firm that makes financial expertise broadly accessible to 23 million customers – from people investing their life savings, to businesses managing their employee benefits, to advisors investing their clients’ money. In this capacity, Ms. Johnson is responsible for executive management of all of the firm’s financial services and diversified businesses, as well as its corporate functions – from asset management, retail and institutional brokerage, to retirement and benefits services, to corporate operations and support functions. She was named to the role of president in September 2013, and assumed chief executive duties in October 2014.
Since joining the firm full time in 1988, Ms. Johnson has worked in and overseen numerous businesses at Fidelity, giving her extensive insight into how the firm makes financial expertise broadly accessible and effective in helping people live the lives they want. Before assuming her current role, Ms. Johnson served as president of Fidelity’s retail, workplace and institutional businesses. Prior to that, she ran Fidelity’s workplace business. During her leadership, Fidelity has maintained its position as the nation’s #1 IRA and 401(k) provider while deepening the company’s commitment to delivering the best customer experience in the financial services industry.
Having begun her Fidelity career as an equity research analyst, Ms. Johnson has also spent a number of years in the company’s asset management division, including serving as president from 2001-2005. During her tenure, she managed a number of Fidelity mutual funds before serving as an associate director for the firm’s equity division, where she oversaw and coordinated the activities of the Growth and Capital Appreciation groups. Ms. Johnson also managed the company’s equity investment systems, overseeing the design and implementation of technology initiatives essential to Fidelity’s trading, portfolio construction, management, and research capabilities.
In addition to her responsibilities with FMR, Ms. Johnson is chairman of Fidelity Worldwide Investment (FIL Limited). A separate company that operates independently of FMR, FIL provides asset management services to investors outside the US and Canada. Ms. Johnson joined FIL’s Board as a director in November 2012 before becoming its chairman in February 2014.
Born in 1961, Ms. Johnson received a bachelor of arts degree in art history from Hobart and William Smith Colleges in 1984 and an MBA from Harvard Business School in 1988. She is a member of the Board of the Directors of the Associates at the Harvard Business School and the Corporation of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
